NAIL SURGERY
Ingrown Toenail Removal Birmingham
What is Nail Surgery?
Nail surgery is a surgical procedure which we carry out under local anaesthesia to cure ingrowing toenails. Our Podiatrists are all trained in nail surgery and our experience gives us fantastic results to cure this painful problem which can affect many poeple. The use of a local anaesthetic ensures no pain is experienced during the procedure and we normally use a chemical to stop the nail we have removed growing back again. This way we can cure the problem and prevent it re-occuring. We can either remove part of the nail or all of it.
In-growing Toenails can be very painful and can stop us being able to enjoy life to the full by preventing us being able to do sports or other activites, even walking can be very painful. Often the in-growing toenail will become infected requiring antibiotics to clear the infection up. These will often help by clearing the infection however if the ingrowing toenail hasnt been treated the issue often just re-occurs.
Here at Walsh Podiatry if neccesary we can prescribe antibiotics and then also treat the problem by removing the part of nail which has grown into the skin. This simple but very effective surgical procedure enables us to offer the solution that will cure the issue and stop the in-growing toenail being a problem and help you quickly get back to activity and being able to get about without pain and with the knowledge the issue has gone and will not come back.
Some of the most common reasons for someone to have nail surgery are:
Ingrowing toenails
Excessively curved toenails (this is known as involution)
Thickened nails due to a fungal infection or trauma

What is Nail Surgery for Ingrown Toenails?
Nail surgery is a safe, effective, and efficient way of dealing with several problems that could occur with the toenail. Before advising any form of treatment, we will conduct an initial assessment and determine what would be the best solution for you. This can be nail surgery for many people because of how safe and efficient this surgery is. However, it is not always recommended as another alternative could be a better option.
When undergoing nail surgery procedures, we use local anaesthetics to numb the whole toe and then remove the section of the nail that is causing the problem. In most cases, we will then use a chemical to stop the nail from re-growing on that small edge section of the nail and so prevent the problem from re-occurring in the future.
After the procedure, the nail will heal within four to six weeks and will not cause any problems in the future. Although swimming and sports should be avoided whilst the nail is healing, the nail will usually remain relatively painless. You can return to your normal everyday activities when the healing process has finished.

No, you do not need a referral from a doctor; you can either call us or book an appointment online. We will provide you with an initial assessment to ensure that nail surgery is the best option for you.
-
Recovery times for nail surgery can vary depending on whether the full nail has been removed or a partial nail avulsion has been completed. If the entire nail has been removed, it could take much longer to grow back than fully when compared to a partial nail avulsion.

Don't worry; it's normal to be a little nervous about any form of surgery, but we can assure you that nail surgery is more or less painless. Most people say that the most painful part of nail surgery is when we use the needle to first administer the anaesthetic and numb the toe. Once the toe has been numbed, you should not experience any pain during the surgery.
-
Nail surgery will usually only take about 15 minutes to perform, but we allow roughly an hour for each patient. The anaesthetic, however, will keep the toe numb for approximately 2-3 hours.

The short answer is no. While it may be possible, driving after toenail surgery is highly dangerous and should be avoided as much as possible for at least the first couple of days.
You should also try to avoid unnecessary physical activity where possible to avoid putting excess pressure on your feet.
