FOOT MOBILISATION THERAPY

Podiatry at Walsh Podiatry

What is Foot Mobilisation Therapy (FMT)?

Over time the bones, ligaments and tendons of your feet can start to function out of their optimum position. If you think of the wheels on a car, it is like when the wheel alignment is out, and there will be more wear and tear on the car. To put things back into their optimum position or 'align' them makes them function much better again. This then reduces the wear and tear on your body and helps the symptoms settle down.

Similarly to car alignment, the foot can also sometimes need a readjustment to be able to function as best as possible; this is where foot mobilisation therapy can help. FMT is a highly effective and specialised treatment method. The practice of FMT involves assessing and treating joints and muscles, which helps to determine areas of joint restrictions within the foot and ankle.

Your Podiatrist at Walsh Podiatry in Birmingham will identify specific movement patterns within your feet and then gently mobilise or manipulate the area to restore a normal range of motion.

FMT works specifically on stiff or poorly aligned areas of joint mobilisation. Through various hands-on therapies of mobilisation and manipulation, coupled with a home exercise program, optimum joint functioning and pain-free motion can be achieved. In some instances, orthotic therapy will also be advised.

How does Foot Mobilisation Therapy work?

  • A foot mobility exam identifies which of the many foot joints are stiff, not moving as they should and lodged in the wrong position.

  • FMT is a great way to improve mobility and promote fluid production around the small joints of the feet as well as ankle joints. By breaking adhesions or restrictions around these joints.

  • Returns bones and joints to their original and optimal position.

  • Allows the body's natural healing factor work towards repairing itself

  • Improves the posture and function of your foot, ankle, knee and hips

  • Boosts nerve function in the lower limbs by increasing blood flow and oxygen to muscles.

What can I expect from an FMT consultation?

Our Podiatry team welcomes you to our practice and looks forward to assisting you in finding a suitable treatment plan for your foot health. After an initial consultation, once we have established that foot mobilisation will be the best form of treatment for you, we will invite you for an initial treatment course.

We have a five-week course of treatment in which we will undertake various foot mobilisation techniques. The first week is twice a week, followed by four weeks of once-a-week sessions. You will be given exercises to do at home during this time also. Often we find this may be enough, and this much improves the symptoms; however, occasionally, this course would need to be repeated.

Do you already have insoles/orthotics as part of your treatment? These are still an essential part of your long-term treatment. You may also be advised to have occasional mobilisation treatments as part of the long-term treatment.
